Psalms 49

The Foolishness of Trusting in Riches.

For the music director. A Psalm of the sons of Korah.

1 aHear this, all peoples;
Listen, all binhabitants of the world,
2 Both clow and high,
Rich and poor together.
3 My mouth will dspeak wisdom,
And the meditation of my heart will be eunderstanding.
4 I will incline my ear to fa proverb;
gI will
Lit open up
express my iriddle on the harp.

5 Why should I jfear in days of adversity,
When the injustice of those who betray me surrounds me,
6 Those who ktrust in their wealth
And boast in the abundance of their riches?
7 No one can by any means lredeem another
Or give God a mransom for him--
8 For nthe redemption of
Lit their
his soul is priceless,
And he should cease imagining forever--
9 That he might plive on eternally,
That he might not
Or see corruption; lit see the pit
,
rundergo decay.

10 For he sees that even swise people die;
The tfoolish and the stupid alike perish
And uleave their wealth to others.
11 Their
Some ancient versions graves are their houses
,
winner thought is that their houses xare forever
And their dwelling places to all generations;
They have ynamed their lands after their own names.
12 But zman in his splendor will not endure;
He is like the animals that
Lit are destroyed
perish.

13 This is the abway of those who are foolish,
And of those after them who acapprove their words. Selah
14 Like sheep they sink down adto
I.e., the netherworld
Sheol;
Death will be their shepherd;
And the afupright will rule over them in the morning,
And their form shall be for
I.e., the netherworld
Sheol ahto consume
Lit Away from his habitation
So that they have no lofty home.
15 But God will ajredeem my soul from the
Lit hand
power of
I.e., the netherworld
Sheol,
For amHe will receive me. Selah

16 Do not be afraid anwhen a person becomes rich,
When the splendor of his house is increased;
17 For when he dies, he will aotake nothing with him;
His
Lit glory
wealth will not descend after him.
18 Though while he lives he aqcongratulates
Lit his soul
himself--
And though people praise you when you do well for yourself--
19
Lit You; or It
He will atgo to the generation of his fathers;
They will never see authe light.
20 avMankind in its splendor, yet without understanding,
Is awlike the animals that
Lit are destroyed
perish.
